A copyright is a legal concept, which grants the creator of original work the exclusive right to distribute (copy) his/her work as they see fit.   For example, literary, musical, dramatic, choreographic, audio-visual, pictorial, sound and architectural original works can be copyrighted.

Many view Copyrighting as a fundamental right held by the creator of the work.  The right to Copyright is contained in Article 1, Section 8 of the United States Constitution. You do not need to register a Copyright with the United States Copyright Office (USCO) in order to claim exclusive right to copy a work.  However, a registered copyright greatly enhances a copyright claim.  

In addition, a registered copyright allows the holder to sue for their attorney’s fees and statutory damages (fixed fee per offense determined by the US government).  A non-registered copyright holder must prove specific damages in a lawsuit.
